OSC - About The Software DEC II
Here's some basic information about DECK II Macintosh software from
OSC. DECK II requires a Power Macintosh, Macintosh 840/660av, or any
NuBus Macintosh with an audio card.

DECK II: Power Mac Hard Disk Recording - No Additional Audio Hardware
Required!
Hard disk recording has been around for years. And it's always been an
expensive luxury only the privileged few could afford.
Well, OSC is changing all that.
We saw that off-the-shelf Macintosh(tm) computers, with the right software,
could bring professional digital audio to the people who really need
it, people like ourselves: underground musicians, independent film
makers, educators and multimedia designers.
So OSC created DECK(tm), the first Mac program to integrate digital audio
and MIDI. It broke the price barrier for digital audio workstations.
MacUser named it "best new music/sound product" in 1990 and 1993.
DECK II(tm), version 2.2--our current offering--will play back eight to
sixteen tracks of 16-bit digital audio on any Power Macintosh(tm),
with no additional audio hardware or AV-enhancement required. DECK
II(tm) includes all of the features associated with high-end digital
audio workstations, such as an unlimited number of virtual record
tracks with full mix-to-disk and automated mixdown, easy graphic
editing, SMPTE sync to all frame rates, synchronous QuickTime(tm) and
MIDI playback and 24-bit moving-fader mixer automation.
DECK II(tm)'s visual editing makes it easy to get real work done fast,
allowing you to maintain as many virtual tracks as you want, while
swapping between track versions or takes instantaneously. You can
record and edit audio, build fades and crossfades, and automate level
directly in DECK II(tm)'s track window. Zoom in close for sample-accurate
cut and paste graphic editing.
DECK II(tm) includes QuickTime(tm) playback so you can watch a digital
video played from the hard drive while recording or arranging
multitrack digital audio. You can easily spot effects and music to
exact QuickTime(tm) or SMPTE frames and your QuickTime movie chases
your edits (or vice versa). To complete the process, just mix the
finished session directly to hard disk, DAT, tape or a QuickTime(tm) movie
with an 8-bit or 16-bit copy of the CD-quality audio mix.
DECK II(tm) is made by OSC. For many years we have been suppliers of
digital audio recording and playback technology to Digidesign. Today we
offer that technology directly to you at a significant savings. The
digital audio revolution is over...now it's your turn.
New Features in version 2.2
- Now runs on any Power Macintosh--no additional audio hardware or AV-enhancement required!
- Now supports 8-bit sound and low sample rates
- Your choice of bit-conversion methods
- Import & export .WAV files
- Import other DECK II(tm) sessions into current session
- Map transport controls to MIDI note-on events
- New Track window navigation tools
- New editing short-cuts and key commands

Who uses DECK II(tm)? If you're a studio owner who must always have the
latest high-end hardware, then you may have overlooked DECK II(tm). If you
need Big Science to impress clients, you've probably focused on expensive
dedicated workstations.
Of course, DECK II(tm) works with the fancy systems (it runs directly on
Digidesign Pro Tools(tm), Avid Media Composer(tm), Avid Media Suite Pro(tm)
and Radius Telecast(tm), and swaps files with any OMFI-compatible workstation
via OSC's new Transport(tm) utility), so you can expand your production
facility by setting up inexpensive satellite workstations using
off-the-shelf Macs.
But we really made DECK(tm) to empower autonomous creative people. If
you're an individual trying to produce audio of competitive quality on a
real-world budget, or an educator setting up a sound lab, or an
independent musician, film maker or media artist, then DECK II(tm) is the
audio tool for you.
DECK II(tm) is being used to produce public radio programming, record
albums, computer games, feature films and national TV ad campaigns.
It's a serious professional tool at a street level price. It's radical
technology that gives more power to the people.
The way we look at it, what good is a digital audio revolution if the
workers can't seize the means of production?
