Tuesday - June 19

Stopped sleeping at eight-thirty but still behind schedule. We were docked at Juneau and sailed at nine. I didn't have a chance to go ashore. Spent the rest of the morning and part of the afternoon in a deck chair, soaking up the sunshine. Tiring of this exertion, I climbed into my berth and had two hours' sleep.

On emerging from my hibernation, I met my friend, Art, and we went to his room to sample his Burgundy. O.K.--and, the dead soldier was consigned to the deep in due and ancient form--with our cards inside. Then to dinner.

After dinner we stopped at Wrangell. As we were on the home stretch, I went on a shopping tour to provide a few trinkets for my friends back home. There is a good curio store there and the cheapest Alaskan article of Alaskan origin was the pendants cut from walrus tusks. They are cut cross-wise and are oval in shape, the same as the cross-section of the tusk. They are then dyed various colors, red, green, blue, or yellow.

The inhabitants of Wrangell are mostly mosquitoes. After making our purchases, we sat on a log on the main street, talking with a few home-towners and murdering the winged stilettos.

There is not much doing on board, the passenger list totals 150 and there is not much activity. I was in bed early, a fitting finale to a peaceful day.
