Wednesday - June 20

We were in Ketchikan this morning. I added a bone cigarette holder, a bone pen and an Alaskan souvenir ring to my store of curios. I took a walk up a canyon to get a quick glimpse of back country in the short time we were there and had to run back to the boat. Made it in plenty of time.

Docked at Prince Rupert at three-thirty this afternoon and everybody headed for the Government liquor store or a beer garden.

Art and I visited all the beer gardens and in one of them we met our friend, Greenabaum. It was our treat--and we had a hard time getting him to accept it. I suppose he knows that we are poor boys and just wants to make us happy.

In about an hour the majority of the crowd had accumulated at one beer garden. There was lots of fun. In order to enhance the pleasure of our beer guzzling I provided a big bag of pretzels. But, they were stale and only good to be thrown at people to attract their attention.

The Government liquor store did a good day's business. Art used his license to purchase Merry Mucilage for the stay-at-homes on the ship and we started back. We each toted a large shopping bag and had a school teacher in tow. The course was a devious one as we had detoured to see the station of the Canadian National Railways.

Art and his friend were behind us and were slow in passing through the station. My school-mam became anxious as we approached the dock and left me at the gang plank. It looks like a pleasant evening.

Our stringed quartet again started the dance--for which heaven be praised. The crowd was congenial and I met a few new girls. One was a very charming French-Canadian from Montreal--she pronounced it something like "Maunt-re-al." Very nice. There was a pretty steady procession between Art's room and the dance hall.

There was a tall, dark young lady traveling alone and although she had been on board during the entire trip we hadn't met her. We had a dance and was quite pleased at my invitation to have some refreshment. In fact, she almost ran ahead of me, seeming to know just where to go. Art is above average height and soon after I introduced him to the new young lady, they disappeared. I was cut out but it was all right with me, Art was having a hard time getting satisfactorily organized.

The dance ended at ten-thirty. The air was cold though, very bracing, but comfortable. Some had to lean over the rail before turning in, but I felt good for all night.
