In the works since 1992, the PHP/DBE Studio Hub was born out of the the extreme technical burdens of performance and the server concept of keeping the large, expensive and noisy devices in a machine room away from the goop.
The SH is a full featured audio studio combined with sophisticated computing facilities including audio and data networking with shared disk and backup. Producers and performers access the SH in the same fashion as a multi-user dialup system. The main difference is that MIDI (or serial-type) data is sent to the SH. Audio is transmitted back to the producer or performer by way of voice quality phone, ISDN or multiplexed phone.
Leaving the equipment in a central (remote) location not only ensures its safety but also provides more equipment and networking capabilities than one might be able to take to a performance.
The SH is not limited to performance. While the current prototype can only be accessed by one producer/performer at a time, multi-user technology is just a cost factor away. The multi-user capabilities are what really makes the system a hub. Producers can use the resource individually or collaborate on audio projects. The SH will soon be the collaborative publishing vehicle for musicians and producers that the WWW is for print and multimedia publishers. For the price of some additional hardware and networking, the concept of a home and pro studio will turn into one client-server model.
This networking cost is, of course, for than equipment transportation costs. However, the cost of data and audio transmission even over cellular, UHF and ISDN or T-1 connections (which can run $5-$100/hr), is negligible when compared to the amount of money saved in repair and replacement of equipment on the road.
